Yogassage
There is an article on yogassage in the March 2008 issue of Massage Magazine. It is a combination of yoga and massage therapy. Most of the therapists who practice this are very familiar with yoga.
They are either students or teachers of yoga who also happen to be massage therapists. Combine the two and you have a wonderful tool to help clients.
Yoga and massage movements are put together for the benefit of the client, sometimes on a massage table, but more often on a mat on the floor where there is more room to move around.
In this technique, the client does not undress. This is a big plus for many clients. Believe it or not in this day of immodest dressing, some of my clients will not get table massage because they do not feel comfortable removing their clothing for a massage. Even though they would be draped, they will not do it.
Since the client stays dressed, there is no need for massage lotion or oil, and no need for sheets.
Stretching movements are taken from yoga to lengthen muscles, giving clients more flexibility. Some therapists incorporate deep breathing into their routine.
I, myself, do not practice yoga personally and have not had a yoga massage. I would like to take a class on this new massage technique. I understand that I would actually need to take yoga classes first to learn how to breathe and relax and stretch before I could give yoga massages.
The author of the article about this in Massage Magazine is Erica Boucher. She has made a yoga video and holds retreats and training programs. For more information,
please see her website.
This could be well worth your time and money, especially if you enjoy yoga. So far, I have not run into any massage therapists who practice this. Have you? If so, please shoot me an e-mail on my
Contact Page.
Thank you!
