Seated Therapeutic Massage
Seated therapeutic massage is not the same type of massage as relaxation chair massage.
It is performed on the client who is in pain with the purpose of providing relief from the pain without drugs or surgery.
For instance, a client with
carpal tunnel syndrome
can actually get relief from pain after one or more treatment sessions.
The massage chair is an excellent place for therapeutic massage. The therapist can reach the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands in the chair with no problem. These areas can be treated effectively using
chair massage techniques.
Pain is usually caused by restricted blood flow in the soft tissues. Restricted blood flow in the painful areas needs to be corrected so the blood will flow normally again. Once that happens, the pain goes away.
First, the massage therapist needs to palpate or examine the client by feeling the soft tissues to find the problems.
Once the problem areas are identified, the treatment to correct the pain by restoring blood flow will begin.
Treatment may take several sessions over several weeks. Some clients report feeling some pain relief after the first session. Stretches, along with the massage therapy can also be incorporated into the treatment plan.
