Massage Therapy For Headaches
Massage therapy for headaches? Yes.
Everyone gets headaches now and then. There are many types of headaches in varying degrees. Some headaches respond very well to massage therapy and others are too severe in nature for the client to get a massage.
If the client has a fever, is vomiting, or has a feeling of nausea, massage is not indicated. These are contraindications for massage and it should not be performed.
Cluster and migraine headaches are throbbing and the client cannot normally do anything but stay in bed in a dark and quiet room until the pain finally subsides. By the time this happens, the client will be physically exhausted and will need a lot of sleep.
After the client recovers, massage can help to lessen the frequency and severity of these severe episodes if performed regularly.
Pain caused by tension will respond well to massage therapy. A relaxation routine plus extra strokes to the muscles around the face and scalp will relieve the pain.
Pain caused by mental fatigue will also respond well to a relaxation massage therapy session.
Pain caused by a sinus condition can be helped by massage therapy but not if there is an infection involved. This would be a contraindication. Once the infection has cleared up, massage therapy can help the client.
