Massage Therapy Book

A great massage therapy book, and believe me, there are many, is not hard to come by. You can start collecting them while you are still in school.

I will list some of my favorites with a brief description for you.

Perhaps the most important massge therapy book while I was in massage therapy school was my textbook. We used Massage Therapy Principles And Practice by Susan G. Salvo.

This is a well-written and organized book perfect for the student of massage as well as the beginning practitioner. It talks about the history of massage, how to do massage, different aspects within the field of massage, includes a huge section on anatomy and physiology, and a chapter about the business portion of massage therapy. Talk about one stop shopping. This book has it all. The diagrams are well done. There is a muscle section with drawings and descriptions of each muscle. Great stuff for the student.

I really enjoyed my textbook and still refer to it. It is a great book! So even if you are using a different book in class, I recommend getting it.

Another book that you should not be without is Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary by F.A. Davis. A must-have for any medical professional, I used this book long before I went into the field of massage therapy. I used to analyze medical claims for insurance companies. The descriptions of medical terms are well-written and easy to understand. It is a great medical dictionary. There are others out there, but I think this one is the best.

Since my site is about chair massage, I will advise you to purchase Therapeutic Chair Massage by Ralph R. Stephens. It is so easy to read and understand, just like watching one of his videos on massage. He has great videos as well as this book. You can get them by going to ralphstephens.com. Ralph Stephens is a great teacher on his videos as well as in his book. I encourage you to fill your library with his resources.

Another good book you should order is Massage: A Career At Your Fingertips by Martin Ashley. The author covers everything you need to know about setting up your business as well as everything massage. I thoroughly enjoyed reading my copy several times. Besides being a massage therapist, the author is also an attorney so he is very thorough but not dry or dull at all. There are a lot of good reference tables in the book that you will refer to again and again.

Some more good massage therapy books follow:

Deep Tissue Massage by Art Riggs

The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies

Success Beyond Work by Colleen Holloway LMT

The A to Z of Essential Oils by E. Joy Bowles

I also have several others and new massage therapy books come out all the time. You can read about new massage therapy books coming out in the three massage therapy magazines I discussed. If you are going to start your own massage therapy business, you will want massage therapy books on business.

The best one is Business Mastery by Cherie M. Sohnen-Moe. It is a book that was written for wellness professional business owners. A great resource for all business aspects of your massage therapy practice, it is easy to read and understand. It has a lot of self-help ideas. Do yourself a favor and get this book.

Another book that is written for any type of business but that I think is helpful is Start Your Own Business by Rieva Lesonsky. This thick book is packed with a lot of useful information that you need to know to start your business.

I hope this list has been helpful to you as you start to build your library of massage therapy books. Check back often as I will add books to the list as they come out and I read them. I love books so this page will grow long.
