License Massage Therapy Practice Legal When Therapist Gets Temporary
When a therapist receives his/her temporary license massage therapy can legally be practiced.
The state (if applicable) will give you so many months to test for your real license but while you prepare for the test, you can make some cash.
Hopefully, you already purchased liability insurance, decided what types of services you will provide, and had your business cards printed.
Let your family and friends know that you are now legally ready to start your practice. Maybe they will help you out by becoming clients and/or by recommending you to their friends.
I say maybe because not one of my "close friends" did that for me. When I offered to practice on them for free while I was a student and after I got my license, they declined. I was very surprised. Time for some new friends, but that is another story......Hopefully, your friends and family will be supportive of you as you begin a new career. Anyway, people I hardly knew wanted massages so that is how I got a practice going.
Just start telling everyone everywhere you go that you are a massage therapist. Sometimes it helps to wear scrubs or a
t-shirt or cap that says something about you being a massage therapist or having caring hands.
Always carry a good supply of business cards with you and give them out everyday. At work, church, the stores you frequent, any clubs you or your kids go to, the schools where you take your kids, the hair salon, sporting events, and the list goes on.
Don't be shy. You will begin to get clients.
It generally takes one to two years to build up a decent-sized practice. After you get your license massage therapy clients will build up slowly so it may be a while before you can quit your day job.
At first, you will want to take every client you can possibly get. As you get more, you can be more choosy and fit clients into your schedule instead of working around their schedule all of the time. After all, you have a life and a family, too.
Some clients will call you and expect you to drive across town the same day they call to give them a massage. Others will demand that you see them right then as if you have an open appointment book and they are your only client.
Don't get me wrong. It is great to have clients who want your services, but if you already have other clients booked or have plans with your family, the caller will have to wait until it is convenient for you to fit them in. You will be surprised at how demanding some people can be. Don't allow it or they will come to expect it everytime!
After a few months, when you test for and receive your permanent license massage therapy will be second nature to you. You will have a lot of valuable experience under your belt and a growing bank account! Best wishes.
