In Massage School Therapy Performed By Students

In massage school therapy is performed everyday by student interns on clients who want a good yet inexpensive relaxation massage.

Clients can get a good one for between $20 and $50.

During the intern period, usually the interns can provide relaxation massage only. In Texas, interns have to perform 40 one hour relaxation massages to get certification from their school. (This is after completing all courses and written and practical finals.) Different states have different requirements.

Some of the clients will say they want deep tissue massage or medical massage. At the outset, they are told it will be a relaxation only massage. Still, some will complain and give the intern a bad review. If the client truly wants a deep tissue or medical massage, he or she needs to book an appointment with a deep tissue therapist and not an intern at a massage school (at least that is how it is in Texas).

The interns are assigned clients for the day and are responsible for greeting them and going over their paperwork and for doing a pre-massage interview. Then the interns show the clients into the massage area and perform the relaxing bodywork. Afterwards, they must collect payment, clean up the table and get fresh linens for the next client and wash the used linens.

Sometimes an intern can have 6 hours of massages lined up in a row without a break. (Been there, done that!) No pay and no tips allowed in Texas. But once the 40 massages have been completed, the intern gets certified by the school. The intern then applies for a temporary state license (if required) so massages can be performed prior to the state test for the permanent license (if required).
