Proper Hydration

Hydration with water is important to your health. Two thirds of our bodies are water. When we feel thirsty, it is already too late. If you realize that you are thirsty, you are already 10% dehydrated!

It is important to drink water throughout the day, even when you do not feel thirsty. Your body needs plenty of water, one half of your body weight in ounces, in order to function properly.

Water is important for making new blood, for your joints to work, and for your organs to work correctly.

Let's talk about drinking one half of your body weight in ounces. Let's say you weigh 100 pounds. An example: Half of 100 is 50. If you weigh 100 pounds, your body needs 50 ounces of water per day in order for it to function properly.

As a busy massage therapist, drinking water is essential for you to keep up the pace you need to have. Be sure to drink at least eight ounces of water when you get up, before breakfast.

I keep a bottle of water on my nightstand as I wake up, from time to time, very thirsty. That way I don't have to get up and go down to the kitchen in the middle of the night for a glass of water.

I also take a bottle of water with me in the car as I travel throughout the day. I keep a bottle of water on my desk as I am doing computer work.

Did you know that water is essential to keep your blood pressure at a normal level?

Hydration with water is important to your immune system as well. Water helps flush out toxins after a massage so it is important for you to encourage your clients to drink a bottle of water after a massage. Some massage therapists give their clients a bottle of water upon completion of a table massage as an added benefit. A bottle of water after a massage helps prevent the client from getting a headache caused by the toxins moved by the massage.
