Head And Face Muscles
There are 11 head and face muscles to be familiar with.
They are:
Frontalis
Occipitalis
Orbiculari Oculi
Orbicularis Oris
Zygomaticus Major and Minor
Buccinator
And the muscles of chewing or mastication which are:
Lateral Pterygoid
Medial Pterygoid
Masseter
Temporalis
Below are the head and face muscle study aids for massage therapy students.
Frontalis
Origin is galea aponeurotica.
Insertion is superficial fascia beneath eyebrows.
Actions--wrinkles skin horizontally on forehead and elevates eyebrows.
Frontalis makes the worried or concerned look. It is a main contributor to tension headaches.
Occipitalis
Origin is lateral 2/3 of superior nuchal line.
Insertion is galea aponeurotica.
Action--moves scalp over head.
Orbiculari Oculi
Origin is orbital margin.
Insertion is superficial fascia beneath upper eyelids.
Actions--squints eyelids, closes eyelids, wrinkles skin vertically on forehead.
This is also known as the winking muscle.
Orbicularis Oris
Origins are maxilla, mandible, and buccinator muscle.
Insertions are muscles that insert in lips and mucous membranes of lips.
Actions--protrudes lips, closes lips, allows use of lips such as eating, talking, etc.
Also known as the kissing muscle.
Zygomaticus Major and Minor
Origin is zygomatic arch for both muscles.
Insertion is lateral angle of mouth for both.
Action--lifts corners of mouth.
These are also known as the smiling or laughing muscles.
Buccinator
Origins are maxilla and mandible.
Insertion is orbicularis oris muscle.
Actions--retracts mouth angles and compresses cheeks.
This muscle allows you to blow and whistle.
Lateral Pterygoid
Origins are pterygoid plate of sphenoid bone and greater wing of sphenoid bone.
Insertions are temporomandibular joint capsule and condylar process of mandible.
Actions--protracts mandible, depresses mandible, moves mandible laterally.
Medial Pterygoid
Origin is pterygoid plate of sphenoid bone.
Insertions are mandibular angle and mandibular ramus.
Actions--protracts mandible, elevates mandible, and moves mandible laterally.
This is the mirror image of the masseter muscle.
Masseter
Origin is zygomatic arch.
Insertions are mandibular angle and mandibular ramus.
Actions--elevates mandible and protracts mandible.
Masseter is the mirror image of Medial Pterygoid.
Temporalis
Origin is temporal fossa.
Insertion is coronoid process of mandible.
Actions--retracts mandible, elevates mandible.
Temporalis is strongest lifter of mandible.
