Muscles Of The Feet
There are five important muscles of the feet that you should be familiar with. They are:
Tibialis Anterior
Extensor Digitorum Longus and Brevis
Extensor Hallucis Longus
Peroneus Longus
Peroneus Brevis
Below are the study aids for massage therapy students.
Tibialis Anterior
Origins are lateral tibial shaft and interosseous memebrane.
Insertions are cuneiform 1 and base of metatarsal 1.
Actions--inverts foot and dorsiflexes foot.
Tibialis Anterior along with Peroneus Longus is called the stirrup muscle.
Extensor Digitorum Longus and Brevis
Origins are calcaneus (brevis), fibular head, proximal 2/3 of fibular shaft, and lateral condyle of tibia (longus).
Insertions are tendons of extensor digitorum longus (brevis), middle phalanges 2-5, and distal phalanges 2-5 (longus).
Actions--dorsiflexes ankle (longus) and extends digits 2-5 (both).
Extensor Hallucis Longus
Origins are anterior fibular shaft and interosseous membrane.
Insertion is distal phalanx of great toe.
Actions--dorsiflexes ankle and extends great toe.
Peroneus Longus
Origins are fibular head and lateral proximal 2/3 of fibular shaft.
Insertions are cuneiform 1 and base of metatarsal 1.
Actions--plantar flexes ankle and everts foot.
Peroneus Longus along with Tibialis Anterior is known as the stirrup muscle.
Peroneus Brevis
Origin is lateral distal 2/3 of fibular shaft.
Insertion is base of metatarsal 1.
Actions--plantar flexes ankle and everts foot.
