Muscles Of The Elbows
The elbows have 5 important muscles. The muscles we will look at are Supinator, Anconeus, Brachioradialis, Pronator Teres, and Pronator Quadratus.
Below are the muscle study aids for massage therapy students.
Supinator
Origins are annular ligament, lateral epicondyle of the humerus, radial collateral ligament, and proximal 1/8th of ulnar shaft.
Insertion is proximal lateral radial shaft.
Action--supinates (outwardly rotates) the forearm.
Anconeus
Origin is lateral epicondyle of humerus.
Insertions are olecranon process and superior 1/8th ulnar shaft.
Action--extends the arm at the middle joint.
Anconeus is known as the unlocker of this arm joint.
Brachioradialis
Origin is lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus.
Insertion is styloid process of radius.
Action--flexes middle joint of arm.
Brachioradialis can be palpated on the radial side of the forearm.
Pronator Teres
Origins are coronoid process of ulna and medial epicondyle of humerus.
Insertion is lateral proximal radial shaft.
Actions--flexes middle joint of arm and pronates forearm.
Pronator Quadratus
Origin is anterior distal 1/8th ulnar shaft.
Insertion is anterior distal 1/8th of radial shaft.
Action--pronates (inwardly rotates) forearm.
