In Class Massage Therapy
In class massage therapy is performed everyday during school. The first half of the day is spent in lecture.
The teacher talks about anatomy and physiology. All of the systems within the human body are taught along with the skeleton and especially the muscles.
There are hundreds of pages to read and study and there is at least one test each week. (Bye-bye free time!) The student will constantly read the material and try to absorb it. It is difficult, especially if you are unfamiliar with medical terminology.
There will also be a great deal of time spent practicing the techniques learned during the second half of the school day.
The second half is spent doing in-class massage therapy. First, the instructor will choose a student for demonstration purposes and then will teach a new technique to the other students. (Volunteer as often as possible--it feels great!)
Then students pair up. One is the client and the other is the therapist. Students change into hospital gowns and get table massages and then halfway through the period, the students switch roles so everyone gets to practice and gets practiced on.
The students choose a different partner each day so they get accustomed to massaging many different body types. The teacher is right there moving from table to table, assisting students and doing demonstrations.
