Chair Massage Certification

In Texas, there is no special chair massage certification. Texas massage school is set up to teach and practice table massage in 500 hours. Once a student has graduated from massage school, he/she must take the state board exam to get licensed. Any Texas licensed massage therapist can perform chair massage after taking some classes for it.

After obtaining a state license, massage therapists can take continuing education classes. One of the classes offered is to become certified to do chair massage.

The chair massage class I took was a two day class. The first day, we learned a basic chair massage routine.

The second day was aimed at therapeutic chair massage. Therapeutic massage helps clients who are in pain to feel better. At the end of the class, I was given a certificate stating that I am certified to practice chair massage.

At the beginning of the first day of class, the instructor talked about having a chair massage practice. He explained how chair massage is different from table massage. He talked about the importance of having liability insurance, especially if you want to contract with companies to massage employees in their offices.

Then the instructor demonstrated a basic chair massage routine on one of the students. Then we all partnered up and took turns giving each other basic chair massage for the rest of the day.

To get our chair massage certification, on the second day, we concentrated on learning how to massage specific problem areas.

The areas were the back of the neck, back, shoulders, forearms, and wrists. We were taught how to identify the muscles causing pain.

We also learned how to perform stretches in the massage chair. The chair is also great for stretches. Stretches can really take away pain and discomfort when properly done. Stretches can also be taught to the client to do each day to help with discomfort in between chair sessions.
