Asian Massage Therapy
Shiatsu is a type of Asian massage therapy. It has been around for over 2000 years in Japan. The word literally means "finger pressure" in Japanese.
It is defined as applying direct pressure along meridian lines (energy pathways) and tsubos (points along the body that are influenced by energy) to assist the energy flow in the spirit, body, and mind.
This therapy is recognized in Japan as a medical therapy and has been since the 1950's. It is taught and practiced all across the United States.
The client remains dressed in loose clothing for the treatment. Depending on the therapist's preferance, the client can be worked on a massage table or on a mat on the floor. If footwork is performed by the therapist, the floor is the better option.
The practitioner applies pressure through the clothes by way of the thumbs, fingers, hands and elbows. Some enjoy using their feet to apply pressure to the client's body.
