Alabama Massage Therapy

Alabama massage therapy requirements can be found at the Alabama Department Of Health's website. The website address is www.almtbd.state.al.us . Here is a link to their website.

650 hours of massage therapy instruction at an accredited school are required to get a massage therapy license in the state of Alabama. A therapist in this state is also required to be nationally certified by the NCETMB prior to obtaining a license in Alabama. This means the massage therapist candidate must take and pass the national massage therapy test in order to get a state license in Alabama.

Contact information for NCETMB is:

National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork

8201 Greensboro Drive, Suite 300

McLean, VA 22102

Phone numbers for the NCETMB are toll free (800) 296-0664 or long distance (703) 610-9015.

The NCETMB website is NCBTMB.com.

You can contact the Alabama State Board by writing them at

Montgomery, AL 36104

or by calling them at

Phone: 334-269-9990

The fax number is: 334-263-6115

The e-mail address is ALMTBD@aol.com

Once a therapist has taken and passed the national certification test, he/she must buy a $1,000,000 Personal Liability Insurance policy and take it along with certified transcripts from massage school, verification of the national certification test, and a cashier's check or money order for $25 to the Alabama state board in order to get a state license.

Once a massage therapist has successfully obtained his/her license in Alabama, he/she must take 16 hours of continuing education classes every two years in order to renew it.

After going through all of this to get a license, be very careful to take the required CEU classes on time so that your license does not expire!
